Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in the Balkans
24, February 2025
The initiative “Solar Connect,” developed by Davor Džakula, Mate Fadiga, Bojana Gašić, and Ana Sofeska, introduces an innovative solution in the form of solar-powered and green bus stops. Instead of waiting for public transport at regular shelters, citizens would wait under rooftops covered with plants and solar panels—in the shade of nature and powered by renewable energy.
The goal of the initiative is not only to reduce urban temperatures, but also to contribute to the creation of healthier, greener, and smarter cities. These bus stops serve a dual purpose: cooling the area through green roofs and powering lighting through solar energy. Additionally, they can function as educational hubs on climate change and sustainable living.
The project is designed to begin with pilot locations in urban areas most vulnerable to heatwaves, and then expand with the support of local authorities, transport companies, and citizens. Public institutions, schools, and NGOs are also involved, raising awareness about the importance of green spaces in urban environments through campaigns, events, and guided tours.
The initiative is adaptable to any city looking to better respond to climate change and enhance the quality of public space. “Solar Connect” addresses more than just heat—it shows us that even in densely built environments, there is space for nature, innovation, and community.
