The second RSPD seminar in North Macedonia – From Ideas to Action: Insights into Policy Making and Implementation

The second seminar of the Regional School for Political Development, was held over the weekend in North Macedonia’s capital of Skopje. From June 14th to 16th, 2024, participants from Serbia, Croatia and North Macedonia gathered to discuss topics related to the policy making process, with special attention to protection of the environment and green policy making. The topics were discussed through the lense of the role of citizens and civil society organizations, public policy instruments, principles of good governance, and elements of the policy cycle, all the way to monitoring of the success of implementation.

Marija Risteska, executive directress at CRPM, held a lecture on “Public Policy and the Role of Citizens and CSOs in Public Policy Making”, sharing her valuable and inspiring personal experiences in initiating public policy. A panel discussion title “The Role of Civil Society and Stakeholders in Shaping Environmental Policies for Sustainability” was chaired by Biljana Matevska, program coordinator at CRPM. The panel included experts of different professional bacgrounds giving their perspectives on the topic, namely, Biljana Dukovska (Macedonian Anti-Poverty Platform), Velika Stojkova Serafimovska (GPG member), and Sofija Zafirovska (Municipality of Aerodrom). Ivana Novoselec of the Academy for Political Development focused her lecture on Croatia’s experience, more specifically titled “European Commission’s Better Regulation Agenda and the Croatian Regulatory Impact Assessment Framework”.

The second seminar also included active participation in workshops and group work, exchanging experiences between the participants and fostering regional cooperation.

The participants will now continue their collaborative group work online, with the help of mentors, to develop their green policy proposals. These proposals will be presented at the third and final seminar of the Regional School program in September in Serbia, where the main topic will be advocacy.

The project is implemented by the Academy for Political Development from Croatia, the Center for Research and Policy Making from North Macedonia, and the Foundation BFPE for a Responsible Society.
